IAS: – Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Exam. IAS exam is the toughest exam in India.IAS exam conducts every year it has 3 stages – Preliminary exam, main exam and interview.

Exam Pattern:

Preliminary:

Time duration for each paper is 2 hours. 

  • The questions in the UPSC Prelims Exam are of objective type or Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  •  There is a ‘Negative Marking’ in the IAS prelims exam for each incorrect answer. The negative marking for incorrect answers will be 1/3rd (0.66) of the allotted marks of that question.
  •  The GS Paper II (CSAT) is of qualifying in nature and candidates should score a minimum of 33 percent in this paper to qualify to the next stage of the exam i.e. Civil Services Mains.

Main exam:

The UPSC IAS Civil Services Mains Exam is a written examination which contains 9 Papers. The Paper A as well as Paper B are Qualifying nature. The Papers Which are considered for Ranking are Paper I, Paper II, Paper III, Paper IV, Paper V, Paper VI and Paper VII which include the papers of optional Subjects. The Candidates can select the Medium of Hindi or English for the UPSC Civils IAS Mains exam 2018-2019. The Final Ranking of the Candidates is done based on the Marks the Students have Obtained in their Mains as well as Personality Test or an Interview.

Paper will be bilingual. 

Personality Test

A personality Test of 275 Marks would be taken of the candidates qualified in the Preliminary Examination. This would include the psychometric Test, Assessment Test as well as the Personal Interview. The Marks obtained in the Personality Test would be added in the calculation for the declaration of the final Merit list.

Qualification:

Any degree (graduation).
From:
  1. any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India.
  2.  or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament.
  3.  or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
  4.  or possess an equivalent qualification.

Note: Final year students can also apply.

Age:

The minimum age to appear for IAS Exam is 21 years. This means that the candidate must have at-least 21 years of age on 1st August of that given year when the exam is held.

  1. Upper age limit for General category: 32 years.
  2. Upper age limit for OBC: 35 years.
  3. Upper age limit for SC/ST: 37 Years.
  4. Upper age limit for Citizens of Jammu and Kashmir: 37 years.
  5. Upper age limit for Defense Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof: 35 years.
  6. Upper age limit for Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service: 37 years.
  7. Upper age limit for blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped persons (general category) :42 years.

  1. Number of attempts for IAS exam : General Category : 6 attempts till 32 years of age.
  2. Number of attempts for IAS exam : OBC : 9 attempts till 35 years of age.
  3. Number of attempts for IAS exam : SC/ST : unlimited attempts till 37 years of age.

  • Current affairs/events of national and international.
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography, Physical, Social,  Economic.
  • Indian polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, human rights issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity, Climate Change, General Science.

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision-making and problem solving
  • General psychological ability

  • Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society.

Paper 3 – General Studies II

  • Governance, Constitution, Politics, Social Justice and International relations.

Paper 4 – General Studies III

  • Technology, Economic Development, Bio diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
